Fans have been demanding more Hulk since he became the breakout character in The Avengers and today the man behind our favorite green rage monster is sharing his thoughts on a potential solo movie. Over the years, we’ve seen several incarnations of The Hulk grace the small and big screens alike, from Lou Ferrigno to Eric Bana to Edward Norton, but none of these variations has created quite as much fervor as Mark Ruffalo’s take on the giant, green anti-hero. Speculation as to when Ruffalo will be seen in his own standalone Hulk film has been running rampant since The Avengers dropped in 2012 and reached a boiling point when the Marvel Cinematic Universe release dates were announced through 2019, but excluded denoting when we might see Ruffalo Hulk-out on his own time. Without any official announcement, the only reasonable thing left to do is speculate about the story itself, assuming the movie is slated for the one of the untitled release dates. And knowing where Marvel’s Phase 3 is somewhat headed, you have to wonder, “where can the filmmakers take Hulk and more importantly, Bruce Banner, that will still surprise fans and audiences?” Many folks have speculated and flat out demanded a Planet Hulk movie, but we’ve had the likes of Avengers director Joss Whedon, Marvel president Kevin Feige, Ruffalo, and most recently Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn tell us that a Planet Hulk film is, in Gunn’s edited words, “total bs.” And we’d have to agree. While Planet Hulk is an entertaining story, it’s all Hulk and no Banner. Feige backed this up in an interview with IGN saying, quote, “I don’t think that’s the first place we would go though for the very reason that…if we were ever able to do a standalone Hulk movie, 60 percent of the fun would be seeing Mark Ruffalo leading…” Now while this may be the case, it certainly doesn’t rule out a potential variation of the storyline that followed Planet Hulk entitled World War Hulk, where our hero seeks revenge on Tony Stark and the others who banished him from Earth. We do know that Hulk will tango with Iron Man’s “Hulkbuster” armor in next summer’s Age of Ultron, but it’s still unclear why. In a recent interview with EW, Ruffalo spoke of potential storylines and where he thinks the Hulk story could be headed. He points out that his increasing age is a factor in pulling off a Hulk film with him as the star, but he also mentioned that age isn’t necessarily a bad thing — it’s an issue Hulk and Bruce Banner could potentially be dealing with. As Banner begins searching for peace, the internal conflict between him and Hulk will increase as one half of his split personality will want to overpower the other, more so than ever. Speaking about this further, Ruffalo provided insight as to what he thinks Hulk’s opinion on Banner was, saying quote, “He’s terrified of him…It’s a version of himself that’s weak. It’s a version of himself that’s vulnerable…It’s very interesting, and I’m stumbling on this. And I don’t know if this is where the next version will go. But if it is in the cards that we’re doing the next version of this, I see some fertile ground there.” Hulk films tend to usually deal with this scenario, but with Ruffalo in the lead and the Marvel Universe at the peak of its story telling capabilities, might we finally see a version that doesn’t feel like it’s missing a piece? With Ruffalo even considering these notions, one has to assume he and Marvel alike are entertaining the idea of taking Hulk on a solo outing. Perhaps with the recent release date announcement and Ruffalo attending Comic Con this weekend with the rest of his Avengers crew, fans wishes for a standalone Hulk movie may finally be granted? We’ll have to wait and see, but to find out what we do know about next summer’s Avengers sequel, be sure to click right here.
